The Kelley family of Kansas was primarily based out of Garden City, Finney County, Kansas. Katherine Kelley Powell was the daughter of popular newspaper columnist Elmer E. Kelley, who died on January 31, 1940. Elmer E. Kelley was born on September 13, 1861 in Indiana. His family moved to Toronto, Kansas in 1887 where he became a school principal. Kelley purchased the Toronto Republican in 1910, and added the Garden City Herald in 1924. He became president of the Kansas Press Association in 1914....
